Sermon Title: The Steadfast Love of the Sovereign God

Scripture: Psalm 33

I. Praise for God as Sovereign Creator

A. The Earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord — Psalm 33:5

B. Creation flows from God's love, not merely his power

  1. By his word the heavens were made — Psalm 33:6-9
  2. All of creation is a manifestation of God's love (General Revelation), rendering all people without excuse
  3. Every experience of creation is God's love poured out

II. Praise for God's Sovereign Counsel

A. The counsel of God's enemies is frustrated and fleeting — Psalm 33:10

B. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, immutable and unchangeable — Psalm 33:11

C. Blessed are those who bind themselves to God's sovereign, unthwartable plan — Psalm 33:12

III. Praise for God's Sovereign Covenant

A. The Hebrew word hesed (steadfast/covenant love) dominates the psalm, unifying its themes

B. God's love makes a downward progression in the psalm

  1. It begins grand and majestic — displayed in all creation
  2. It narrows to his covenant people — Psalm 33:12
  3. It becomes personal — let your steadfast love be upon us — Psalm 33:22

C. Genesis 1–2 parallels Psalm 33's movement

  1. Elohim (sovereign creator God) is the name used throughout Genesis 1
  2. At the summary statement in Genesis 2:4, the name shifts to Yahweh Elohim — the covenant Lord
  3. The creator of all things is the same God who enters covenant with man, giving him dominion and binding himself by promise

D. Connection to Psalm 32: forgiveness of sins opens the eyes of the heart to behold what Psalm 33 declares

  1. Psalm 32 ends with shouts of joy over forgiveness — Psalm 32 / Psalm 33:1 flow seamlessly
  2. We cannot truly sing Psalm 33 until we have first recited Psalm 32
  3. The blood of the New Covenant, bringing forgiveness in Christ, puts a new song on our lips and opens our eyes to the steadfast love of God filling all creation
