Sermon Title: The Kingship of the Son
Scripture: Hebrews 1:1-4
I. Introduction: Christ as the Final and Full Revelation of God
A. In former times God spoke through prophets in many ways; now he has spoken finally through his Son (Hebrews 1:1-2) B. Because Christ is the full and final revelation, we need go no further than him C. The writer of Hebrews presents seven stunning statements about the Son before moving to his high priestly ministry D. Central question for every reader: Who do you say that I am? (Matthew 16)
- The book of Hebrews can be read as an extended unpacking of Peter's confession: You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God
- We must hold the whole Christ — both his humanity and his deity
II. First Stunning Statement: The Son Is Heir of All Things
A. The Father appointed the Son heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2) B. Sonship carries the right of inheritance; the Son inherits not only possessions but the Father's own nature and authority C. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to the Son (Matthew 28:18)
- The Nations are the Son's heritage and the ends of the earth his possession (Psalm 2:8)
- This authority is already in effect — the Son reigns now, chiefly through his church
- The church is co-heir with Christ (Romans 8:17; Jeremiah 3:17; Zechariah 8:12) D. Even pagan rulers and wicked nations operate under God's sovereign authority (e.g., Cyrus; the Exile) E. The church's commission to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth flows from reigning with Christ
III. Second Stunning Statement: The Son Is Creator of All Things
A. God created the world through the Son (Hebrews 1:2) B. The Creator has rightful ownership of what he has made — this grounds the Son's heirship of all things
- John 1:1-3: All things were made through the Word, and without him was not anything made that was made
- Colossians 1:16: All things were created through him and for him — thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities C. The one who walked the dusty streets of Palestine made those streets — the incarnate Son is the sovereign Creator D. We are called to recognize by faith the Majesty of the Son of God, present at creation and Sovereign Lord of all things
